Travel and Tourism information for
Fanny Bay, Vancouver Island, BC
Oyster shells at Fanny Bay.
Fanny Bay is a small seaside community at the south end of the Comox Valley.
It is located on Baynes Sound, the narrow, sheltered strait running between
the east coast of Vancouver Island and the western shore of Denman Island.
Fanny Bay is well known by shellfish lovers and restaurateurs for the highly
sought after oysters produced on the shallow, silty sea bed of Baynes Sound.
History
The first historical reference to Fanny Bay occurs in the surveys of Captain
G.H. Richards of the Royal Navy, cited in the 1864 edition of the Vancouver
Island Pilot.
Climate
The Comox Valley generally
enjoys short, mild and rainy winters and warm, dry summers. The moderating
influence of the ocean at Fanny Bay's seaside location contributes cooling
breezes in the summer and milder temperatures in winter.
Travel
The Old Island Highway, also known as the "Ocean side Route" (
BC highway #19A ) passes through Fanny Bay 20 minutes south of Courtenay
as it winds it's way along the coast between Parksville and Campbell River.
BC Ferries operates a car ferry service to Denman and Hornby Islands from
Buckley Bay, just north of Fanny Bay.
BC Transit operates a local bus service connecting Fanny Bay with
the rest of the Comox Valley.
The Comox Valley has something for everyone: culture,
scenic beauty, numerous outdoor recreational opportunities, mild climate
and a relaxed lifestyle are all here to enjoy.
