Wine making is a recent industry on Vancouver Island. Vintners had been slow to recognise the existence of areas on Vancouver Island where the climate is highly suitable for grape growing. Since it's recent inception, wine making has been quickly proliferating on Vancouver Island, and excellent wines have resulted from a growing number of small wineries. Initially, wine making ventures were centred in Southern Vancouver Island on the Saanich Penisula, the Cowichan Valley and southern Gulf Islands. More recently, the Comox Valley, in central Vancouver Island has become the newest center of Vancouver Island wine production.
Some of the Vancouver Island region's newest wineries are located here in the Comox Valley. From the Comox Valley, the trail of wineries continues one hour's drive south on the Inland Island Highway at Nanaimo. Continuing south for another 45 minutes or so, the Cowichan Valley cradles the greatest concentration of wineries. Further south, the Saanich Peninsula near Victoria, and on the Gulf Islands are home to a growing number of wineries. Below are listed some of the wineries to be encountered along the route south from the Comox Valley to Victoria at the southern tip of Vancouver Island.
